Born on Mardi Gras Day, in some not too distant time, singer/songwriter Gilles Snowcat is a mysterious, mischievous fellow. His recordings, which span more than three decades and as many continents, are witty, rebellious postcards to a life lived at the edge of chaos.
Despite years of jet-setting antics, Snowcat has apparently settled down a bit, as he tells me his recordings of late have been done in his private studio.
“We See Limes Studio (sometimes spelled Wee See Limes for no reason that I understand) is a cozy place full of pillows, blankets, talismans, cushions, gri-gri’s and some music instruments,” he writes. ”It’s where I record most of my music. It’s actually filled with magic, I was inspired by Lee Scratch Perry’s way to organize his own studio and using magic to make it work.”
Snowcat’s latest masterpiece, the self-referential “You’ve Been Unboxing Gilles Snowcat” finds our hero presenting various adventures in hotels, bars and beaches, atop some very groovy beats laid down by Europe’s finest musicians, including members of Lunear. It’s a fun ride and worthy of frequent spins.
The new disc is released on Snowcat’s own label: “We See Limes Records is my own vanity label. Not a record company yet, but label that I created just because I thought it was fun. It might grow into something bigger though, if I care to work on it, which isn’t guaranteed yet. :)”
