It would take something really special to revive in me the spirit of Christmas past. And amazingly The Analog Girl’s “VIRTUAL VACATION” does just that. Yet at the same time, these electronic ditties conjure up an idealized Christmas yet to come.

The two instrumental tracks employ virtual analog sounds to evoke nostalgia and the warm sounds of holiday sweetness. In addition to evoking the wintery sounds of Christmas in the 70s and 80s, the two-song single plays upon the shelter- at- home lives we are experiencing due to COVID-19.

The tracks employ emulations of the Roland CR78 Compu Rhythm, as well as an emulation of a vintage electric piano that sounds a lot like a Wurlitzer, plus a Korg M1 Soft Synth. The nostalgic vibe comes from the vintage sounds as well as the delicately sweet melodies. The drum sounds and electric piano are Abelton synths.

As Mei Wong, The Analog Girl tells me: “They were initially pieces that I was creating to be played in a public space, so the vibe I was going for was urban, in transit, and spatial. And then I decided that I was going to save them for something else, maybe lay some vocal over. But recently when I revisited them, I decided I was going to keep them instrumental. The tinkly synths suggested winter, snow, holiday tunes, and so I made a few minor edits and decided to put them out for the holiday season as a “surprise” 2-track.”

The single VIRTUAL VACATION by The Analog Girl releases on streaming platforms on Dec 18.
