In the past few months, The Analog Girl, Singapore’s Mei Wong, has released videos of her songs from last year’s  outstanding album “Awe.”

The video for “How,” features The Analog Girl’s signature ethereal sounds, along with mesmerizing footage, originating from C Technical On Pexels, edited by Wong.  The video for “Your Mind” includes her first use of motion capture technology, animating a character created by Yorumi Rena, whose creations are popular on YouTube.

The music of both videos feature Wong’s recent experiments in beat-based ambient music, resulting in songs that are somewhat psychedelic in nature. Her vocals are embedded deeply into the soundscape, but that’s not to say that the lyrics aren’t meaningful. Both songs point to a sense of wonder at the distance between two lovers, as the gap closes, then widens again, while the sense of doubt and wonder remains.

I asked Mei if these lyrics are based on actual experiences of heartache. In an email exchange, she wrote:  “They are largely based on imagination – and, I say ‘largely’ because when it comes to songwriting, I believe that the lines between imagination and reality are often blurred, and I probably was tapping on some bits of past emotions, however totally taken apart and put back together into a narrative that’s more fiction than fact. I often write with movie scenes in mind, especially when it comes to the ballads, and these are no exception.”

From “How”
Am I confused /What is this phase /What is this kiss /I want to know/How can you show/ And then you go/ It’s not the first time.
From “Your Mind”
Want you to hold me but I keep going back somehow (somehow)/Wanting to hold you but I don’t know what’s on your mind (your mind)

I asked Mei about the the video making experience. She writes: “Making my own videos is one of the processes that I truly enjoy and find relaxing to do. It is like seeing the music that I made come to life, and I was once a producer at MTV Asia so music videos will always have a special place in my heart. As to how I approach it, I usually start with the lyrics, and that informs the visual direction.”
