Last year flew by due to the pandemic. Something that only came to my attention recently was released in May 2020. Austin’s Adoration Destroyed is fronted by Erik Gustafson, and their goth rendition of the Billie Eilish tune “You Should See Me In A Crown” is more than a reimagining, it’s a synth heavy fresh take on the popular song.
Gustafson is the boss at EG Cine, and I met him through his production of videos by WeirdWolves and Autumn Stay. Danielle Blizzard of Autumn Stay says she adores Gustafson’s band Adoration Destroyed.
Where the original tune by Eilish is sad and melancholy, totally minimalistic, the version by Adoration Destroyed is lush and atmospheric, featuring washes of synths, heavy drums and guitars, and passionate vocals by Gustafson. And while the Eilish cut is more experimental and sparse, Adoration Destroyed presents a heavy version, with drums that are decidedly processed (not sure if they’re fully electronic) and heavy guitars as a foundational element.
A goth approach adds layers of meaning to the song. No doubt a heavy obsession in goth culture is Christianity, so the idea of crowning someone who’s suffering resonates in this version. In my very brief exchange with Gustafson, he told me that this was very fun cover to create. I hope to speak with him soon about what comes next for Adoration Destroyed.
Adoration Destroyed features Erik Gustafson on vocals, guitars and synths, Richard F. Napierkowski on synths, and Patrick Fears on percussion.
