British synthpop group Taurus 1984 presents a variety of faces, with no fewer than five female vocalists to appear on their upcoming album. Their new single, “Dreaming,” features Dana Jean Phoenix, who also happens to be the romantic partner of band leader Alastair Jenkins.
Jenkins shares songwriting and instrumental duties with his pal Bobby Cole, as they explore the sonic textures of 1980s rock and pop, with lyrics by Phoenix. In our extended interview, Jenkins revealed how he became enamored with the era and about his creative workflow. And despite the bands’ name, there could be some surprises ahead that find the project developing beyond any temporal limits.
Into The 80s
“Dreamin’” is a dance-worthy and radio-ready track with strong vocal melodies and rhythms. Indeed, the production sounds right for the era it evokes, and the choice of synth basslines, digital piano sounds, riffs and sax solos (as well as a vintage Juno 106) brings you right into the middle of the 80s. In addition to the skilled musicianship and Phoenix’s lovely vocals, the producer’s hand can be heard. As mentioned, Phoenix wrote the tune’s soulful lyrics and the delivery is totally hot.
As Jenkins explains: “This time round we are working with Michael Oakley based in Canada in a mixing and producing capacity, once we have the song finished and a rough mix, we send them to Michael who does his production and mix on them, it then goes off to Pete (Maher – U2, Depeche Mode, The 1975) for mastering.”
Jenkins continues: “It’s been a really enriching experience working with Michael, having his ear on the songs has been really wonderful. After a point, In my opinion, you, as a writer and a producer, can get too close to a song and hearing things objectively can be tricky, so it’s been such a huge benefit and luxury having that third ear on them.”
Stayed tuned for more music from Taurus 1984, and their new album coming soon.
