Brilliant Dance Music: The Keplerian’s Irresistibly Energetic ‘Spaceship Earth’

Mar 28, 2022
The Keplerlians are from Portugal, and released their EP' Spaceship Earth' on March 25, 2022.

By Keith Walsh
Named after the renaissance German astronomer and philosopher Johannes Kepler whose theory of planetary orbits revolutionized our understanding of the universe, The Keplerians deliver immaculately produced, energetic synth pop that’s irresistibly catchy and danceable.

The three song EP Spaceship Earth has much to offer. While the title track and the second, “Final Frontier” rely on electronic riffs and grooves, the third and final track, “The Place We Call Home,” is an inspiring synth pop song with a vocal narrative — with an 80s flair — about finding our common humanity while prospering on the planet Earth.

Centered in Lisbon, Portugal, The Keplerians are RR 14-775 and RF 14-703. Very little information about these mortals is available. Tracks are written and produced by these two, except for “The Place We Call Home,” which was composed by RR 14-775, RF 14-703, JG 17-897 and CN 10-179. Vocals on “Spaceship Earth” (a quote from Marshall McLuhan) is by EJ 21-983, while Vocals on ‘This Place We Call Home’ are performed by RA 17-004.

Despite the futuristic and mysterious numbers that designate the participants, the music of The Keplerians is warm and user-friendly. There’s a kitschy element for sure, with the romantic vision of a future in which technology assists humanity to achieve peace and well being. The elements of funk, new wave, disco and techno dance – with flavors of Daft Punk, Kool And The Gang, Michael Jackson, and New Order — all work together to create a harmonious unity.

The Keplerians have summed up their message this way, in describing the title track of their new EP: “This song was inspired by the famous words of Marshall McLuhan – ‘There are no passengers on spaceship Earth. We are all crew’. This quote, featured in our track ‘Spaceship Earth’, was our starting point for composing this EP, following the same concept as our first one: spreading awareness about the need to preserve and conserve planet Earth, to remind earthlings that they have a beautiful, unique and epic Home that needs to be loved and cherished… and while we do this, why not also make them dance?”

The Keplerian’s Spaceship Earth is on Blim Records, out of Portugal, and is available everywhere.
