Lia HIde's Song "Dinner" is based on the Platonic Dialogue "Timaeus"

Dark Pop is perhaps the most commercially viable version of electro-goth out there. Lia Hide’s new single and video “Dinner” is the perfect example – it’s a stylish, gothic synthpop affair, full of lovely minimalism, including deep pulsing bass, a monstrous kick drum and a vintage Roland 808 style snare drum. Not least of this mix are the passionate vocals by Lia. There’s a gorgeous trumpet track by Stelios Chatzikaleas and brilliant synth programing by Lia. The video seals the deal, with its stunning design and cinematography.

The video hints at an intriguing triangle, where two males and Lia sit for dinner, consuming wine and bits of paper with printed text. The suggestion is that of bitter verbal exchanges, ‘eating our words,” though Lia has based the story of the song, which is subtitled “The Timaeus Sonata,” on an ancient Greek ‘text,’ the Platonic dialogue of the same name. In that dialogue, the main narrator, Timaeus, muses about what can be known of two worlds: the physical world, and the eternal. He concludes that since nothing can occur without cause, that there must be a creator, which he posits is a Father figure.

“Some days I wait/Other days it’s too soon /I hear your voice /Deep inside my room/ Deafen my way /Hearing past the will /Darken my day /Lure me out today /Can we meet after dinner tonight? /Can we focus on being alright?” From ‘Dinner’ by Lia

One conclusion of Timaeus is that the physical world is imperfect. One of the two male figures in the video does look like a father figure, while another seems to be a younger suitor. Perhaps they are rivals? It’s not long before this dark and gothic dinner meeting explodes into discord and chaos, with Lia being left alone, as the men depart.

The video is beautifully shot, with stylish sets, cinematography, makeup and costumes equal to Hollywood’s best. It’s produced by KISS THE FROG and directed by Thanos Liberopoulos and Yiannis Margetousalkis. The tune is the follow-up to “Proposal,” which is the first single from the just released album by Lia Hide, The Missing Fourth Guest.
