Resisting Nihilism, Goth Style: ‘Annihilator’ By REVOLUTION ABOVE DISORDER

Stephen Nicholas White Of REVOLUTION ABOVE DISORDER

By Keith Walsh
From the stylized all caps name to the lyrical messages, REVOLUTION ABOVE DISORDER is all about making a statement. The project of Stephen Nicholas White, RAD tunes range from atmospheric post rock to synthpop. Songs on the Annihilator EP fall into this latter category, and across three mixes, the song establishes a variety of moods and purposes.

The message seems to call for radical change to erase the woes of greed, failed romance and ‘meaningless’ pursuits. However, by creating such attractive music, White nullifies the very nihilism he presents.

Jack Corbett’s original mix from Vancouver is the mix for radio — it’s in your face with haunting vocals, prominent beats and a pulsing bass. Jagz Kooner’s mix out of London is the one to languish to on a cool evening, while Noise Baby’s mix from Berlin, Germany is the bizarre club mix to get people moving on the dance floor. The mastering by Mark Gardener in Oxfordshire is pristine. This is great sounding EP with three very different mixes of a tune that’s drenched in passion from its very conception.

Performances by White demonstrate a real virtuosity and an ear for what works. Additional guitar is by Mat Durie and drums by Adam Fink, courtesy of Artofact Records.
