From Adam Collier of Blaklight comes an exciting new electronic music band. “Beautiful Crisis” is the first single from a project of the same name. Collier plans to release a number of singles with a rotating cast of vocalists.
“Beautiful Crisis” is exquisitely catchy, with features of great synthpop and the disco that preceded it. The tune has a stunning vocal performance by Ryan Slemko, who also wrote the lyrics to Collier’s beats. References are Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, Gloria Gaynor, Yaz, and Erasure. Production is immaculate, as is mastering.
Collier was kind enough to answer a few questions about this brand-new work in progress and his gear.
Synthbeat: You recently changed the project name from “Full Frontal Disco” to “Beautiful Crisis.” What’s the vision of the project — how will each song be different yet still be disco?
Adam Collier: My idea is to have revolving vocalists. There is no limit on how many each will sing. It really depends on their availability and if I jive with that person and if I am inspired to write more.
Synthbeat: What’s the secret to capturing the essence of disco?
Adam Collier: I grew up in the 70’s and have always drifted towards dance music in some form or another. Its just in my DNA, I guess.
Synthbeat: Are the songs all going to sound like dance music from the 70s?
Adam Collier: The songs are not all going to have a disco sound. The first single just happened to turn out that way. My idea is more like a discotheque where you hear different styles of songs but all using electronics.
Synthbeat: How has your setup for this differed from the BlakLight setup?
Adam Collier: The set up is essentially the same. I am still using Logic as my DAW and soft synths. BlakLight will always have the dark pop sensibility while this will probably delve into more poppy chord structures. It will always be a moving target as BlakLight will always be in the forefront.
Adam tells me the next single, “Deep,” will feature vocals by Mark Bebb and is due in a couple weeks. Stay tuned for more exciting synthpop!
