By Keith Walsh
With Turntable I bring some of the best electronic music that I’ve heard recently. This month the tunes range from catchy synthpop, to spooky ambient (and Halloween vibes) and politically aware industrial.
Josie Pace “I’m Begging You”
Pace’s outstanding songwriting and charisma are on full display here, as on the entire album that “I’m Begging You” is from. That album, IVOX10V5, is an exemplary set of cutting edge synthpop. Hailing from Detroit, Pace’s musical partner Ken Roberts compliments her visceral performances and lyrics perfectly, with catchy and impactful synth beats.

Julian Shah-Tayler “The Devil Knows”
A new mix and video for this single from Shah -Tayler’s much anticipated new album nears perfection, and features performances from David J and MGT. It’s from Elysium, which may be JST’s finest offering yet. Dreamy synths and guitars, messages about the power of love, and that sexy, stylish baritone voice add up to something special indeed.

Ree-Vo “Spacebox”
Playful rapping over glitchy electronic grooves dominate this catchy hip hop single by the British duo of T. Relly (vocals) and Andy Spaceland. This single is fresh and ready for the Top Ten anywhere. My review of the album “All Welcome On Planet Ree-Vo is here.)

The Pull Of Autumn “Outlaw Empire”
With its downbeat vibe, glitchy electronics and haunting atmospherics, this complex tune by the team of Mark Stewart and Adrian Sherwood perfectly captures that melancholy feeling of the last three months of the year. The mix of dub, jazz and electronica comes from Rhode Island, in the United States and is from their forthcoming album, Beautiful Broken World, the fourth long player from The Pull Of Autumn.

Cucurbitophobia “The Ritual By The Creek”
Speaking of autumn vibes, this single from the Autumnal Apparitions album is creepy and mysterious in all the right ways. The project is as mysterious as one would hope for – minor keys, textures of synth, piano and guitar that are difficult to define blend into a strange, dark and ethereal soundscape. The band’s name translates from Latin as “Fear Of Pumpkins,” so you know, it’s all in fun, right?

RetCon “New Day”
The glitchy intro to this darkly melodic industrial techno song gives way to a world-weary song calling for rebellion against injustice and heartless consumerism . RetCon’s concern with global politics is implied here, and the rebellion here is apparently to be a peaceful resistance, ala Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The song title is somewhat ironic, given the sense of resignation in the vocals of Jason Hollis, who expertly plays and produces everything on the track, and the album its from, EP.01. “No gods or masters — it’s a new day.”
