For every dystopian future we can imagine, a soundtrack is needed. Lucky for us, there’s Neon Insect, an electronic music project by Nils Sinatsch that brings dark, glitchy beats to your audio systems.
Everything about Neon Insect is mysterious. On bandcamp.com, it’s said he’s from New Moscow. Is this the New Moscow in Ohio, U.S., or an imagined place informed by science fiction? His domain (not working at the moment) has a German extension. “Rewired” talks about a broken system and the toll it exacts on all. It’s from Neon Insect’s upcoming album Love, Sex & Robots. The previous album New Moscow Underground tells of a future where Russia successfully invades the United States.
With soundbites from George Orwell’s 1984, Neon Insect’s tunes should inspire fear. Is all of this a cautionary tale? Should the lessons of this imagined dystopian future inspire us, what forms will our inspirations take? Perhaps they will take musical forms. The lyrics to “Rewired” suggest that as systems crumble and political rhetoric is exposed, rugged individualism will prevail.
Science fiction, or a valid warning? In any case, we have these skillfully crafted darkwave grooves to entertain us at the very least.
