From the land down under, Melbourne’s Suburban Spell brings lots of cool synthwave vibes with their new single “Bright Gold Cross.” At the helm is Peter Endall,, with smooth vocals and production to match. Formerly the keyboardist of Schizo Scherzo, Endall brings tons of talent to the project.
“Bright Gold Cross” is the second single from Suburban Spell’s upcoming EP Falling Down, following “Natural Science.” The album will be their seventh release. Religion and sci fi themes inform work by Suburban Spell, and the lyrics of “Bright Gold Cross” suggest a kind of primal medieval paranoia:
fire and stone and wood and steel/ If you raise ravens they’ll turn on you /bright gold cross is defending us
Production on these songs is nothing short of stunning, with mixing and by Alan Calaitzis at Toyland Studios in Melbourne, Australia. Endall’s synth sounds are resonant and energetic, while his voice fits into the classic synthpop style of a flesh and blood human struggling, observing and making discoveries in a world increasingly dominated by technology.
Falling Down will release on June 23.
