By Keith Walsh
German synthpop artist Meersein mixes catchy pop beats with goth lyrics and visuals, in the darkly enchanting new tune, “Haunting.” His voice is perfectly vulnerable as he tells a tale of a lost love that lingers in his memory, in his “body and mind.”
The music is archly sinister, with an insinuating guitar line, mysterious synth stings, and those classic analog drum beats similar to a Roland TR-808. The production is beautifully minimalist, not unlike early Depeche Mode and OMD. The gothic twist (which only appeared on later DM albums) gives Meersein’s add a bittersweet element.
The video for “Haunting” just heightens the goth connections, with a lovely femme fatale, abundant fake blood, and graveyard scenes. As gorgeous as the lady is, and even though the blood is merely theatrical, its presence should be sufficient to scare off any potential suitors.
Since 2021, Meersein has explored darkwave electronic music, releasing his debut single “Speechless” in 2022, and the following singles “Invisible” and “Lost” feature his signature dark electronic pop style. Meersein also has a radio show and does reviews and interviews with other rising forces in darkwave synthpop.
