Just last month, post punk pioneers The Veldt released their long-lost album, Illuminated 1989, which was produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins but was shelved by their label, Capitol Records. Now that fans finally have the chance to enjoy Illuminated 1989, The Veldt present a daring remix of the track “Aurora Borealis” from that album. The “Aurora Borealis Remix” is built upon beats from another U.S. band, Run DMC (from the song “Sucker M.C.s”) as well as a cameo from Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins on background vocals.
“Aurora Borealis Remix” features the same notorious Roland TR-808 drum machine found on Run DMC’s self-titled debut from 1984. The track features production inspiration from Carlos Bess who helped Wu-Tang Clan shape their innovative hip hop sound.
Twin brothers Daniel Chavis (guitar, vocals) and Danny Chavis (guitar) have jammed together as kids in their hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, before moving to New York City in the 1980s to form The Veldt. They are joined with Japanese-American bassist/programmer Hayato Nakao to complete their trio. Nakao also created the mesmerizing video for the new remix single.
In addition to Elizabeth Fraser, On the “Aurora Borealis Remix” The Veldt are joined by Joseph Hue Boyle on bass and Robin Guthrie adding additional guitars.
