Artists with a growth mindset who revise themselves are the most interesting. Margot Day, once locked into the dark imagery of goth and witchcraft, presents a new look and feel, while still exploiting the witch character, with a new song and an ironic, fun approach. It’s the kind of glitch in the matrix that we all need.
“Cauldron Bubble Pop” finds Day tossing out the super serious goth romanticism of her early work, instead embracing camp and cartoon kitsch in a new video that almost begs for the creation of a Margot Day emoji. The tune even includes a brief flute solo by Day, just brief enough to keep up with the accelerated pace.
Videographer Erik Gustafson gets creds here for breaking out of expected forms into something really fun, precisely because it’s not taking itself seriously at all. Metamorph’s earworm “Cauldron Bubble Pop” is the kind of fun that finds me craving a large boba milk tea with light ice and a side of mysticism.
