From the desert in Joshua Tree, California, comes the provocative electronic music trio Unicorn Domination. Led by Chelsea Uniqorn, who moved from Portland, Oregon after releasing a few albums, Unicorn Domination uses moody electronic music to present narratives about trauma, anxiety and experiences of being the other.
“Swords” is the new single by Unicorn Domination, and it’s true to the project’s avoidance of cliché or commercial formula. That’s not to say that “Swords” is not compelling – it certainly is. The minimalist electronic tune is strange and beautiful, with a video recorded at Joshua Tree National Park, featuring modern dance by vocalist Uniqorn, drummer Clint Havard and keyboardist Lucia Luna. There’s a cool rasta downbeat that fits in with the mood. Lyrically, “Swords” is a fantasy.
“On a white horse riding through the desert/Riding away from everything that hurts/See it’s easy leaving it behind/It’s fine…”
From “Swords” by Unicorn Domination
Like the mythical unicorn that gives the trio its name, Unicorn Domination exposes our fascination with myths, with parallel worlds and the revealing of emotions that come with being true to oneself. “Swords” was produced by Appu Krishnan and mastered by John Greenham.
