Sometimes less is more, and lyrically, the new single by Darwin, “Don’t Tell A Soul” is rather minimal. In the stunning video directed by Rona Rougeheart, his dark vision explodes onto the screen in breathtaking black and white. Statically-charged guitars and a melodic bassline lead into an ominous dread, with scenes of intrigue amongst a film noir vision of fine clothes, cocktails, cityscapes, and beautiful people, including a ‘glittering man’. You have to see it to believe it.
Darwin often explores the darker side of human nature. His chosen persona in “Don’t Tell A Soul” is both vulnerable and controlling, alternately pleading or threatening for silence, then asking “hold me, the words escape me/see me, your eyes invade me/feel me, my soul is empty/heal me…..”
There’s a strong electronic element, with bubbling synths (by Ash Reyes, Darwin and Julian Shah-Tayler) in the middle of the song, but guitars (Reyes, Darwin and Shah-Tayler) and drums (Brian Viglione) hold the tune together, as color bursts into the visual frame. This tale of an intriguing secret affair has us wanting more of Darwin’s dark vision and Rougeheart’s stunning cinematography.
